A Full Electrical Fit-Out for Panelco in Stoke-on-Trent

Panelco needed a full commercial electrical fit-out including power, lighting, heating and fire safety for a set of newly fitted rooms, and they wanted one contractor to look after all of it. Our electricians designed the installation, fitted it, tested it and handed over the certificates at the end. Here’s how the job came together.

The brief

The new rooms included a canteen, corridors and toilets, and every one of them needed to be ready for staff to use. That meant a safe power supply, lighting that works hard without wasting energy, heating for the winter months and a fire alarm that covers every space.

Panelco also wanted the work done neatly and with as little disruption as possible to the rest of the site.

Getting the power in

Every installation starts with getting electricity safely to where it’s needed. We ran a brand new supply from Panelco’s main switchboard using armoured cable, which has a layer of steel wire built in to protect it from knocks and damage.

That cable feeds a new electrical panel. Think of it as a larger version of the fuse box you’d find at home. Everything we installed runs from it, and if a fault ever happens, it cuts power to that one circuit and leaves the rest running.

To carry the cables, we fitted heavy duty metal cable tray, galvanised steel trunking and plastic conduit. It keeps the installation tidy, protects the cables for years to come and leaves room for Panelco to add more later.

Fire alarm and emergency lighting

When a building changes, its fire safety systems need to change with it. We extended Panelco’s existing fire alarm so it covers all the new rooms, including detectors in the spaces above the ceilings where a fire could start out of sight.

We also fitted emergency lighting in every room. These lights have their own battery back-up, so if the power goes off they come on automatically and everyone can find their way out safely. Both systems were tested before handover.

Heating and hand dryers

We installed heaters high on the walls, out of the way and ready for winter. Each one has a tamper-proof thermostat, so the temperature is set once and stays there, which keeps the rooms comfortable and the bills sensible.

In the toilets we fitted electric hand dryers, so there are no paper towels to buy, restock or clear away.

Lights that switch themselves off

In the areas where lights tend to get left on, we fitted motion sensors. The lights come on when someone walks in and switch off once the room is empty. It’s a small change that saves energy every single day.

Tested and certified

Once everything was in, we tested every circuit to make sure it was safe and working properly, then issued the certificates to prove it. Those documents are Panelco’s record that the installation meets UK wiring regulations, and they’re what insurers and inspectors ask to see.

All of our electricians are NAPIT Approved, which means our work is regularly and independently assessed against UK safety standards.

What the client said…

“From start to finish, HMM Electrical were a pleasure to work with. The job was finished on time, the site was left tidy every day, and their electricians knew exactly what they were doing. We wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.”
