Service: Installation of New Gas-Fired Boiler and Buffer Tank

Overview:

Newcastle Town FC, based at the Roe Lane Playing Fields in Newcastle Under Lyme, required an upgrade to their heating system to improve the efficiency and reliability of their heating infrastructure. The club reached out to HMM for assistance in replacing their outdated heating system with a new ACV Heatmaster 200 gas-fired boiler and an 800-litre buffer tank. The project was essential for enhancing energy efficiency and providing reliable heating for the facilities, ensuring that their pitches and indoor areas remained warm and operational throughout the year.

The scope of the project was extensive and involved the complete removal of the old system, installation of a new heating unit, and modifications to the existing infrastructure. This case study highlights how HMM successfully delivered a comprehensive heating solution to Newcastle Town FC.

Challenges:

  • Outdated Equipment:
The existing heating system at the Roe Lane Playing Fields was no longer efficient, and the old boiler was frequently experiencing breakdowns. The system’s inefficiency led to rising energy costs and unreliable heating, particularly during colder months.

  • Limited Downtime:
As the playing fields are an active site, it was crucial to complete the installation within a limited time frame to minimise disruption to operations. The club needed to ensure that the heating system was up and running quickly to maintain its facilities.

  • Safety Compliance:
The installation required meeting all safety standards, including ensuring the proper handling and disposal of the old equipment, safe gas connections, and adherence to local regulations governing gas-fired boilers.

The HMM Solution

HMM provided Newcastle Town FC with a comprehensive solution to address all of their heating needs, with a focus on system efficiency, safety, and minimal disruption to the site’s activities.

The project was carried out in several stages to ensure a smooth transition from the old system to the new one, with no impact on the functionality of the site.

  1. Initial System Assessment and Design: HMM’s team conducted a full assessment of the existing heating system and determined the best approach for installing the new boiler and buffer tank. This involved designing a solution that would optimise the space and ensure that the new system would operate at peak efficiency. Based on the needs of the client, we selected the ACV Heatmaster 200 gas-fired boiler and an 800-litre buffer tank to meet the heating demands of the site.

  2. Disconnection and Removal of Old System: The first step in the installation was safely isolating and disconnecting the existing heating system. This included:

    • Isolating the water supplies to the old unit

    • Disconnecting the electrical connections and gas supply

    • Removing the vertical flue, which was no longer needed

    • Safely disconnecting and removing the old ACV unit
Once the system was safely disconnected, we disposed of the old unit in compliance with environmental regulations.

  1. Installation of New Equipment: The core of the project was the installation of the new ACV Heatmaster 200 gas-fired boiler and the 800-litre buffer tank. Our engineers carefully installed the new system, ensuring that all components were properly integrated into the existing infrastructure. This included:

    • Installing the new gas supply and vertical flue, which was customised to suit the new unit.

    • Altering the pipework to accommodate the new equipment, ensuring optimal flow and efficiency.

    • Installing a new expansion vessel to ensure the safety and stability of the water system.

    • Integrating the 800-litre buffer tank to enhance system efficiency, storing heated water for later use and reducing energy consumption.

  1. System Testing and Commissioning: Once the new equipment was installed, HMM’s team conducted a thorough testing and commissioning process to ensure that everything was operating as expected:

    • We filled and tested the system, checking for any leaks and ensuring proper pressure levels.

    • Air was removed from the system to ensure optimal circulation of water.

    • Electrical and gas supplies were connected and tested for safety, ensuring that the new boiler operated efficiently and safely.

    • The system was fully commissioned, and all necessary certifications were issued, including the required gas safety certificates.

  1. Ongoing Support and Maintenance: As part of our commitment to customer satisfaction, HMM provided Newcastle Town FC with a 1-year warranty on the new ACV Heatmaster 200 boiler, subject to the manufacturer’s terms and conditions. We also offered a recommendation for regular annual maintenance to ensure the continued efficiency and longevity of the system.

The Outcome

The new boiler and buffer tank installation was completed successfully, providing several key benefits to Newcastle Town FC:

  • Enhanced Efficiency: The new ACV Heatmaster 200 boiler, coupled with the buffer tank, greatly improved the heating system’s efficiency. The buffer tank allows for heat to be stored and distributed more evenly, reducing the need for constant boiler operation and lowering energy consumption.

  • Reduced Downtime and Disruptions: The installation was completed within the agreed time frame, ensuring minimal disruption to the club’s operations. The system was fully functional and operational without any delays, allowing the facilities to continue being used without interruption.

  • Cost Savings: The new system is expected to lead to significant cost savings in terms of reduced energy bills and fewer maintenance issues. The reliable operation of the new boiler means fewer repairs and improved long-term reliability.

Compliance with Safety Standards: HMM ensured that all work was completed in compliance with gas safety regulations, providing Newcastle Town FC with peace of mind that the new system is both safe and efficient.

Feedback from Newcastle Town FC:

"We have found HMM, their staff and people to be professional, friendly and efficient. Kept in the loop at all times and the job was completed without fuss! Great job!"
